Intern at the Garden


BGO is seeking interns for our Horticulture Team and Event & Rental Assistants and Marketing & Communications Assistants. Note: these are non-paid positions.

Horticulture Team

Department: Horticulture

Job Status: Full or part time-BGO will accommodate class schedules to the best of their ability.

Horticulture Intern

The Horticulture Intern is a hands-on position and involves working as part of an intimate team. The Intern must be able to accomplish a wide range of activities requiring physical labor in extreme weather conditions. Interns also work hand in hand with guests and volunteers, and thus must have satisfactory client service skills. Hands on training will be provided in a variety of horticultural areas (see below).

Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Care of diverse plantings of trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, grasses, and annuals.
Seasonal landscape work including pruning, clean-up, dividing and transplanting, mulching, etc.
Use and maintenance of equipment and tools needed to perform daily tasks.
Hand watering and monitoring irrigation of plantings, especially during time of establishment and drought.
How to be a good representative of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks.
Various other duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Traits:

Attending a University
High School diploma or GED
Possess a strong commitment to horticulture and teamwork.
Highest ethics as they relate to all aspects of business.

Work Experience

Previous horticulture experience preferred (may be volunteer).
Can include retail nursery, farming, gardening, or other horticulture related fields.

Skills and Abilities

Good communication skills are required as this person will be working on a small team.
Ability to work independently, with initiative, and as a team player.
Strong ability to work under pressure and with time constraints.
Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

Event & Rental Assistant

Department: Facility Use

Job Status: Part-Time

Event & Rental Assistant Intern

The Event & Rental Assistant is a hands-on position and often involves working as part of a team. Event & Rental Assistant must be able to accomplish a wide range of activities requiring clear communication and excellent organizational skills. The candidate must be able to respond quickly to change, ensuring the smooth and efficient running of an event. The individual will work closely with the Director of Special Events. Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Assist in planning and executing special events & fundraisers
Research on marketing of other gardens and facilities
Assist with the preparation and execution of wedding, rentals, and other special events
Work with clients to ascertain their precise event requirements
Co-coordinate everything on the day of the event to ensure that all runs smoothly
Co-coordinate vendor scheduling-caterers, florists, bakeries, party planners, and equipment rental companies
Meet & Greet client and guests
Enforce the rental policies of the Garden’s with the client, caterer, guests and vendors.
Oversee the dismantling and removal of the event and clear the venue efficiently.
Be a good representative of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks
Various other duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Traits:

Attending a University
High School diploma or GED
Possess a strong commitment to customer service
Highest ethics as they relate to all aspects of business

Work Experience

Previous wedding and/or event experience preferred (may be volunteer)
On the job training will be provided

Skills and Abilities

Good communication skills are required as this person will be working directly with clients.
Ability to work independently, with initiative, and as a team player
Strong ability to work under pressure and with time constraints
Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task
Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve

Physical demands: In the work environment described below, the position requires verbal and written conversation with others, sitting standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, and strenuous lifting/moving objects up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, and in an inside and outdoor venue. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The position demands a flexible work schedule that will include evenings, and weekends.

Marketing & Communications Assistant

Department: Facility Use

Job Status: Part-Time

Are you a highly-motivated and creative individual? Are you a whiz at social media? Love to write? Shoot photos? Know your way around a WordPress website?

Yes? Then read on!

Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Help update images and content on the Garden’s website
  • Post Garden info to websites such as tourism sites and media calendars
  • Research and write basic news releases
  • Take and upload digital photos of the Garden
  • Provide general office and project support for the Marketing & Communications Department
  • Assist in supporting the Garden’s social media efforts as needed, including filming and edit movies.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Traits:

  • Strong writing & communication skills
  • Ability to work on computers and use a digital camera
  • Ability to use or to learn WordPress
  • Ability to work on deadline
  • Should be able to work alone and as part of a team
  • Experience using YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, blogging is desired
