Daylilies
Hemerocallis sp.
Daylilies, often called “ditch lilies,” are clump-forming, upright herbaceous perennials with foliage reaching 1 to 1.5 feet tall. Native to Asia and central Europe, they are not true lilies. The genus name comes from the Greek words hemera (day) and kallos (beauty), a nod to the fact that each bloom lasts only a single day.
Today’s hybrid daylilies go far beyond the classic orange and yellow varieties of the past. Modern cultivars offer a wide range of colors, sizes, and bloom times—some flowering from spring all the way through to frost. One note: deer do find them especially tasty, so plan your planting location accordingly.
Visit us now through July to see our impressive daylily collection! Cross either bridge along the Streamside Trail to find the Daylily Display Bed, lovingly maintained by the Northwest Arkansas Daylily Society and its dedicated members.
