Profusion Zinnia
Zinnia elegans x Zinnia angustifolia
The Profusion series of zinnias is a beautiful cross between Zinnia elegans and Zinnia angustifolia. Of the 20+ species of zinnias, both of these are native to Mexico. Z. elegans, the most common zinnia in home gardens, grows 2–3 feet tall and produces large, showy blooms. Z. angustifolia, also called creeping zinnia, forms low, clumping mounds 8–16 inches tall.
By combining the large flower size of Z. elegans with the compact growth and disease resistance of Z. angustifolia, plant breeders have created a truly superior zinnia. Profusion zinnias are durable, pest-resistant, and unappealing to rabbits and deer. They attract pollinators in abundance — bees and butterflies are constant visitors — and are highly resistant to powdery mildew. They’re also drought tolerant, heat resistant, and will bloom continuously without the need for deadheading. Their compact size makes them perfect for both garden beds and large containers.
Profusion zinnias come in a wide array of colors — from crisp white, sunny yellow, and bright red to soft pinks and apricots — with some blooms even doubled for extra fullness. They flower nonstop from summer right up until the first frost of fall.
Here at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, we’ve planted the following Profusion series varieties: Cherry Bi-color, Red Yellow Bi-color, Double Hot Cherry, and a Profusion mix of five different varieties.
Come visit and enjoy the vibrant splashes of Profusion zinnias throughout the Garden — a true summer staple for us thanks to their incredible performance and season-long color.
